my new lens. :) pretty pleased with it. Makes you feel wonderful taking nice portrait shots, though there are downsides to this lens as  it does'nt do well when taking group photos. It's extremely good and useful in poor lighting conditions though.

Flowers in the Garden

Sculpey

Thank you to Sculpey and Macdonalds for saving our day from being one of sore boredom! (:  Huilin and i beautified paper clips and thumbtacks with coloured clay. Evolving from masses of just coloured blobs into defined objects like sheep and grass, we can say that we have definitely improved! Now, im just waiting to see the final product after my dear friend has baked them in the oven at 130 degree celcius.

Apparently, the clay doesnt stick well so Elephant Glue has got to save the day!

A Nest in the Garden

What a brilliant find Amy made! A bird with pretty pink eyes, possibly a pigeon guarding her precious eggs well nested within the row of bushes in my untouched weed-filled garden.

Trying to snap a picture of the nest was difficult, having to weave into the branches as silent as possible. The mother sensed danger as soon as i made a move inwards and flew away. This gave me a fantastic opportunity to observe the slightly blueish specked eggs. What beauties!
Fortunately, the mother who was watching the nest even from another tree did not attack me. Hopefully, i can track the progress of the eggs, an idea Amy insists i carry out. Time to go check out the nest again. (:

post exam (:

its been a really long while since i have have penned down anything really.. things have been going fine for me so far except for the bouts of sinus attacks as well as old woman back and neck pains which have gotten better i must say! Prelims have come and gone, and im very glad they are gone. hmm.. i'll just fill you in on what ive been up to after the exams!

tuesday: i went shopping for bag materials (printed cloths) with julia at spotlight. It took super long because we couldnt find another cloth that matched the first, which was cute with little popped out whales as well as fishes sewn on. So, in the end we had to settle for two entirely different sets of cloth. Sadly, neither one of us has decided how to make the bag, actually, more like who to help us to make them. what lazy people we are.. we watched a movie too, the hunting party as well as bought gifts for teacher's day. its so hard to fins wang wang mini cake balls anymore. sad.

wednesday: woke up late and ended up being really late meeting grace, jiayi and tanny for lunch at marina square. the bus took way too long and i took the wrong bus too. silly me. we ate at MOF (Ministry of Food) pretty good food but quite pricey. Then i took a bus down to meet ulia and we had tons of fun making the teacher's day gifts!

these are the pitures of the pretty food jars(:

nice pic of the sea in sentosa..

Mass movements

Mass Movements in Singapore

Mass movement is the downward movement of material such as rock regolith and soil on slopes, under the influence of gravity, without erosive agents like wind water and ice. The various types of mass movement in Singapore are, fall, slide and heave.

ROCKFALL

Rockfall took place on the steep walls of the Quarry at the Bukit Timah Nature Park. This steepness (50 to 90 degrees) greatly exceeded the angle of friction and the internal strength was overcome, resulting in rock fall. Factors affecting this movement are the presence of joints, faults and fissures that allow weathering processes such as thermal disintegration and water pressure in pores or joints to occur.

SOIL CREEP

Soil creep is the gradual and continuous movement of soil down a hill slope under the influence of gravity. Damp soil and trampling by animals and humans can result in soil creep. The creep is evident from the tilting of trees. Due to Singapore's hot and wet climate, the process of wetting and drying is common, and as the soil dries, a crack may result from contraction. When it rains again, this crack will be filled with material from upslope and a net movement downslope takes place.

LANDSLIDE

A landslide is the movement of rock and regolith where the masses of materials retain their coherence while sliding. Landslides are common in Singapore because abundant rainfall, characteristic of tropical weather, makes rock structures vulnerable to weathering. Water accumulated at the base of the impermeable layer increases the weight and lubricating effect between layers of rock. This reduces the friction between soil particles and rock layers, resulting in the negative loss of pore water pressure.

Landslides can also be caused by human activities when piles in soft clay are subjected to lateral forces induced by horizontal soil movements from nearby construction activities such as deep excavations, tunnelling and approach embankments.

Case Study 1: 2007 Landslide Incident

On 11 January 2007, heavy downpours in Singapore caused soil near the Bukit Batok MRT Station's tunnel to loosen, releasing a landslide. Other than the Bukit Gombak area, landslides were also reported in Westlake Avenue off Thomson Road, Parbury Avenue off Upper East Coast Road, and Jalan Girang in the Braddell estate.

This damaged property and affected families who had to be evacuated from their homes.

Case Study 2: Collapse of Nicole Highway

The Nicoll Highway Collapse occurred on 20 April 2004 when a tunnel, being constructed for a MRT line collapsed. It caused a cave-in and brought the highway and surrounding land down into it, forming a ravine 30m deep. This was the result of the weakening of the underlying soil due to construction.

Singapore
’s Mitigation Strategies

Hazard mapping

Singapore engineers define the areas of potential landslide activity and mass wasting hazards on a map. If used properly in the planning process, hazard mapping reduces the risk of landslides by keeping people away and preventing any construction from taking place on the slope. Measures are also taken to stablise weak slopes.

Monitoring and interpretation

Engineers monitor and interpret slide movements that result from rainfall. Instruments are used to detect ground movements and ground-water pressure.

Slope drainage and covering

Slope drainage reduces pore water pressure by introducing drainage lines within a cliff face to intercept overland flow and remove water from the cliff’s surface and body. Slopes are also covered by a large sheet of durable plastic to prevent mass movement.

Terracing

Terracing lowers a slope's gradient and makes it more stable.

One example of Mitigation in Singapore

Parts of Pulau Ubin was subjected to aggressive soil erosion in 2000. Picture A has a steep sided slope and after heavy rain, the sand will become saturated and turn into a slurry and flow downslope. Not only that, water is heavy and the infiltration of water into the soil will also cause mass movement to occur. Water flowing through rocks can dissolve some of the materials that bind the rock together. The removal of cementing materials decreases the cohesion of rocks and saps some of the slope strength, preparing it for mass movement.

After 2 years of vegetation

Bushes and small light weighted plants are planted on the slopes to absorb water, decreasing the saturation limit of the slope material. It also bind together soil particles and hold soil to bedrock with their roots reducing the likelihood of rapid or mass wasting of a slope.

The pictures that are finally up! (:

The 4E5 CLASS GATHERING @ SENTOSA PHOTOS ARE FINALLY OUT! We all had a fun time at the beach taking tons and tons of photos especially to keep all these memories as they are so close to out hearts. After having a picnic lunch of tuna and egg sandwiches, we headed into the water to gather wet sand to built our supposedly gigantic sand castle which turned out to be a sand MONSTER! After which, a few of us decided to rent bicycles to cycle along the entire coast of sentosa and it was lots of great fun exploring the entire place, going to places that required so much money such as the images of singapore without any money to pay.. we bought very expensive ice cream too

Upon our return to our picnic area! played some frisbee and chilled, sang and caught up. It really gives you a sense of satisfaction and happiness to be with friends whom mean so much to you and whom you rarely see nowadays due to differing schedules. I really thank God for this group of friends whom are so true to each other and love each other so much. (: It was great meeting up!

Swimming and Baking with Oreo and Liting!

our brownies turned out to be the nicest brownies i have eaten in my entire life! (: Initally the top layer was entirely burnt but we realised in time that we put it too high up near the heater of the oven.. when we smelt a burning stench after five mins, we ran towards the oven and screamed when we realised the entire top bit was burnt. However, fortunately, we could scrape it off and start afresh. We were so greedy and couldnt wait for the brownies to be done, we started pinching off the bottom of the burnt crush for bits of unburnt brownie bits and it was really yummy. To top our brownies off, we had ice cream.. ooooh.. feeling your tunny rumble? (:

flying phone

i was awoken by huilin's phonecall and in my attempt to answer the phone, i flung it onto the floor and had to crawl under the bed just to grab it. the lunch at mellie's school is cancelled!!! clarissa and huilin were screaming in my ears about a particular person..that caused the whole lunch confusion. At the present moment, ive been trying to upload photos to no avail. photobucket is not cooperating. booo.. off to meet huilin  for shopping later! yaay! :)

(:

i have a terweeble stomach ache and have been spending ages trying to get this to work. (:
